Campaign details

Campaign : Awareness of Preserving of Rivers
Theme : “Love Our Rivers”
Date : 20 Oktober, 2008
Vanue : Petrosains, Suria KLCC
Organised by: ePJJ MC222 Semester 10,
(PRO350) Public Relations Counselling Project

The launching of this event will take place at Petrosains, Suria KLCC. The decision to select Petrosains as the venue is because its location is in the finest landmark in Kuala Lumpur ie. KLCC. It can bring prestige to this event. Petrosains is also known as a place where education of science and technology is well received by the community.
Also often appreciating the environment and nature activities are conducted there eg. Recycle and Water themed activities.

Rationale For Campaign

In an attempt to make all the rivers in Malaysia clean and pollution free, the public must be made aware of how bad the situation is of some of our rivers. There are cases where some of our rivers are considered “dead” because no living thing can survive in the river. A good example is the Sungai Pinang in Penang. It is so polluted that even micro-organisms which feed on human waste cannot survive. We have exploited our rivers beyond sustainable levels, and in many places, what is left is a degraded river system. The river becomes polluted and devoid of aquatic life; it gets silted up and cannot perform its function as a drainage channel. This is the sad situation of some of our rivers, especially the river which runs into industrial and human settlement. People just do not appreciate rivers anymore. Something ought to be done to remedy the situation. The best way is to launch an educational campaign so that the public will understand and love our rivers more. Restoring rivers is not cheap. If we do not act now and put into place strategies and programmes to conserve and preserve our rivers, future options to bring nature back to our rivers would be even costlier.

To make the public aware of of these problems, apart from the continuous educational and awareness programmes, a campaign must be launched at every level, that is, National, State, District and even at College and school level. The proposed “Love our river “campaign will help the public to understand the importance of rivers and make the public love the rivers and not to pollute them.

If more people are aware of the importance of rivers, the easier it will be to manage the rivers. Now people living by the rivers in particular, are starting to realize what they have done to their river. They are beginning to appreciate the existence of the river to our eco-system.

Rivers not only supply drinking water they also are important for recreation and tourism. The biggest threat to our rivers is uncontrolled development upstream, which results in silting the river and causes floods downstream.
This campaign therefore can help the public realize the importance of rivers and encourage them to preserve and beautify the river.

4.0 Campaign Objectives

The main objective of the “Love our River” campaign is aimed at encouraging public awareness, empathy and care towards our rivers and the concerted efforts undertaken to clean our rivers nationwide. By doing this, the public should not pollute the river but to love them so that our future generations will follow and continue this legacy. Apart from the continuous educational and awareness programmes, the objectives for having this campaign are as follows:

4.1 To create and promote awareness among the public to take care and love
the rivers and the environment; the importance of rivers in the individual’s daily life.

4.2 To increase the awareness among the public on the need to conserve the natural environment and preserve rivers so as to create empathy to love the rivers.

4.3 To introduce to the general public the steps and practices that can

4.5 To remind industrial companies situated along or near a river to play their role in
